7 Design Trends Taking Place In 2020

Every year, seemingly right before the January 1st, a tsunami of predictions come out from the graphic design community. What are the latest design trends? How are graphic designers going to stay contemporary and provide value in the marketplace?

In my opinion, a lot of these articles are written a little too premature. It's like a meteorologist trying to predict a snow storm on the Fourth of July. Yea, that might happen. Let's wait and see how things play out.

I'm publishing this article on June 14th, a couple weeks before the halfway point of 2020. We've got 5 and half months under our belt. Here are seven trends in graphic design that are happening right now. Plus, a bonus trend

1) 3D depth and realism

Thanks to the new technology and software capabilities, we will keep seeing more awesome 3D graphic design compositions.

2) Ultra thin geometry

Geometric lines illustrate objects that are man-made and technological, whereas curvy lines represent more natural and organic forms. In 2020, we are seeing designers merge these line styles to achieve impossible shapes.

3) Hand lettering with loads of personality

Typography has always been important in graphic design. In 2020, the trend of big and bold type will continue, but in a more human direction with custom hand lettering.

4) Sustainability

More emphasis on eco-conscious products and services will lead to further simplification and a continued focus on design that feels organic, calming and natural.

5) Motion and animation

Attention spans are becoming shorter and shorter. More brands are using moving content to further cut through the noise, capture attention and create more interesting experiences for their audiences.

6) Imperfection

The Instagram-inspired notion of showing idealized versions of our selves on its way out. Designers are portraying real people so that audiences feel a stronger connection.

7) Device dependent designs

User experiences will become fully tailored for the platform. Expect to see websites and web apps designed with unique experiences for each format.

Not a trend. Here to stay: COVID19 & Human Rights

2020 has been a whirlwind of a year so far. It's knocked us down and kicked us in the gut.

Between the coronavirus pandemic and the world's response to the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, we've moved in a direction that we probably didn't expect before the year started.

It's amazing how fast things can change. These economic, health, and social issues are penetrating society, hopefully changing us all for the better.

In terms of graphic design, we're seeing more social-inspired designs than ever before. Like many others, designers are putting their professional skills and resources to good use and are promoting messages of safety and unity.

As more and more people shift to virtual lifestyles, digital, clean designs are becoming more important. Also, creating a diverse portfolio is not just politically correct or niche oriented. That's an old mindset that needs to be obsolete. Incorporating different cultures, thoughts and beliefs into design will be a key component to creating positive social change. And the change is already on the way.

In summary, 2020 is helping give designers more purpose. COVID19 and Human Rights aren't trends. They're current events right now that will change the way the world operates. Graphic design isn't exempt from this.
