Jasper vs. ChatGPT: Which Tool Is Right for Your Needs?

As a writer and editor, I’ve used both AI writing tools frequently and in different capacities. So, I can walk you through some advantages and disadvantages of both tools.

I’ll say from the start that I typically use ChatGPT more than Jasper.

Ok. Let’s dive in so that you can make the best decision for you and your business.

Jasper Overview

Jasper Website Banner

Jasper (formerly Jarvis) is a conversational AI platform that helps marketing professionals automate their content. It is one of the oldest AI writing tools on the market, so the company is tried and tested and uses the only slightly older GPT-3 as its natural language processor. They’re in beta testing for integrating GPT-3.5 into the platform to be on par with ChatGPT.

It offers multiple templates and recipes to streamline your content production, especially for short-form content like emails, social media posts, ad copy, and more. The templates are easy to use and navigate. And just like with any AI tool, the better the information you input into the template, the better the results will be.

While Jasper can create blog posts, learning the commands and navigating the recipes to create those posts has a bit of a learning curve. (Recipes are somewhat like templates, except they’re user-created and usually meant for long-form content.) If you need blog posts and articles, I recommend using a tool like Content at Scale to do the heavy lifting for blog work. (Check out our Content at Scale review here.)

Jasper’s definitely more friendly for folks needing to write shorter content. So, if you need to rewrite an introduction or conclusion, it works well through the templates.

Jasper vs ChatGPT Pros and Cons

Jasper Pros:

  • Jasper is built with content marketers in mind.
  • The platform is reliable.
  • The templates work great with proper input.
  • Perfect choice for short-form content.
  • The platform is easy to use and navigate.
  • Jasper generally passes AI detectors.
  • It integrates Copyscape, a reputable plagiarism checker, at a per-word cost.
  • You own the copyright to the text you produce on Jasper.
  • It integrates with Grammarly and Surfer SEO.

Jasper Cons:

  • There’s a huge learning curve to using Jasper.
  • Jasper isn’t great for blog production.
  • The text will need to be edited.
  • Using the recipes for longer content is tricky.

Jasper Use Cases

As a former Jasper user, I can say that I liked it best for its short-form capabilities. It could whip up an email or an outline quickly and easily. There were fewer steps to learn to get good output.

But using it for blogs is pretty tedious. Jasper uses commands, which are supposed to mimic speech. It takes time to learn which commands generate the best results. Getting the right kind of prompt can be tricky. But several marketers swear by Jasper. It just wasn’t really for me.

I need to be able to create more blog posts than short-form content, so it just didn’t make sense for me to keep the service.

If you’d like to see the platform’s blog creation abilities, I have a sample blog post that I had Jasper create, which you can see here.

ChatGPT Overview

ChatGPT Banner

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot platform that operates similarly to Jasper in many ways. But it uses an updated version natural language processor, GPT-3.5. OpenAI created ChatGPT for a wide range of applications and does not focus on content marketing like Jasper does.

It works by typing in a phrase like “write an introduction about owning a new puppy.” And it will do exactly that. It’s meant to interact with you just like you would with another human (hence the chat part of the name).

You can even tell ChatGPT to act like a statistician or a zoologist, and it will answer your prompt just that way. It will also write small programs using coding languages like Java that you can enter into your website.

Where it shines is in creating short-form content. I use it for idea generation, outline creation, creating lists, and finding gaps in my own outline topics. It can create blog posts, but they’re shorter and often return from AI detectors as written by AI.

Unlike Jasper, it does not have templates to generate quick content, which is something on my wish list. But once I became accustomed to which types of prompts generate good responses, I created little “formulas,” if you will, to make creation quicker.

The biggest plus about ChatGPT is that it is free, which I love. They’ve recently begun charging $20 per month ChatGPT Plus. It gives Plus users priority on the server, meaning folks on the free plan can get booted or won’t be allowed to sign in until traffic slows down. This brings me to one of my biggest issues with ChatGPT.

It crashes or gets bogged down with the huge amount of traffic to the site. To say it’s annoying is an understatement.

The other caution I have with using ChatGPT is how I use it. While I could create blog posts with ChatGPT, I don’t because I don’t own the copyright for that material. There is also talk of watermarking GPT-3 and later versions. For those reasons, I don’t use any text on ChatGPT that I don’t heavily edit, and I pretty much only use ChatGPT for things like idea generation and outlining.

ChatGPT vs Jasper Pros and Cons

ChatGPT Pros

  • Unlimited Free plan!
  • It works great for short-form content, idea generation, and rewriting paragraphs.
  • It remembers previous Chats on the same topic, so it can expound on what has already been generated.
  • Short-form content typically passes AI detectors.
  • ChatGPT offers a wide range of applications.
  • It can create small programs in standard programming languages.
  • ChatGPT Plus is only $20, which gives priority on the server.

ChatGPT Cons

  • On the Free plan, ChatGPT frequently crashes when the site has a ton of traffic.
  • No templates.
  • Long-form content can’t beat AI detectors.
  • The text will need to be edited.
  • Currently, users don’t own the copyright on the text they create.
  • ChatGPT doesn’t integrate with other platforms.

ChatGPT Use Case

As I mentioned before, I frequently use ChatGPT in several ways. I didn’t find the learning curve to be as steep as for Jasper. It felt pretty organic to interact with.

I am mindful of the issues that surround the platform, so I can work around them easily. I just keep in mind that the best ways for me to use it are to create ideas and outlines, find gaps in my topics list, and others.

To give you an idea of the type of short-form content it can create, I’ve included a short prompt for ChatGPT to rewrite an existing sample introduction as well as the output. You can see it here.

Comparison of Features

Jasper vs ChatGPT Comparison

Jasper and ChatGPT are extremely close in terms of functionality. They both offer a chat-based interface and can produce similar content. Soon, Jasper’s own version of ChatGPT will be out of beta testing and be tailored to use in the content marketing niche.

What Went Into My Choice?

I chose ChatGPT because it’s budget-friendly and its ease-of-use. Even at $20, ChatGPT offers no restriction on the word count it produces. Jasper does. Its plans are completely dependent on word count. If you go over, you will have to pay more. I like not having to worry about that.

Even without the templates, I find ChatGPT easy to use for creating short-form content. Do I wish there were templates? Certainly, but it’s not a deal breaker. I like how stripped-down ChatGPT’s interface is. It’s literally a text box where I “talk” to the AI.

Questions To Consider

  • What are you going to be using Jasper or ChatGPT for?
    • Do you want to have the option of producing blog content?
If so, you’ll probably want Jasper, even if it’s not the best AI for blog creation.
    • Do you only need short-form content?
If so, you should consider ChatGPT.
  • Are you going to produce text that needs to be copyright protected?
    • If so, you’ll want to go with Jasper.
    • If not, you’ll be fine with ChatGPT.
  • How much will your budget allow for?
    • If your budget is tighter, test out ChatGPT.
    • If your budget has the room, you can opt for Jasper.
  • Do you want to ensure you have a reliable AI writing platform?
    • Jasper has never gone down for me. It’s against their interests as a business to provide a poor product.
    • ChatGPT Plus helps to negate that issue.
  • Do you need the AI writing tool to integrate with other tools?
    • If so, Jasper offers integration with Surfer SEO, Grammarly, and Copyscape.
  • Do you need the AI tool to create programs for your website, like interest rate calculators?
    • If so, ChatGPT will create those for you.

Further Considerations

As you can see, the answer is not totally cut and dry. Knowing exactly what you want the AI to do or how you intend to use it and any budgetary constraints will be the first factors to consider.

But in either case, testing out these platforms is free. ChatGPT is free, but also Jasper offers a trial.

I would plan out a few content tests that suit your needs. Here is how I test out AI writing tools. I choose some keywords for blogs, create my own outlines and choose some email prompts. Then, I input those same prompts into each AI to see how they stack up regarding the output’s quality.

Running these tests will help you compare the products on an even footing.

Now if you don’t have time to do the testing, we’ve done that for you in our course. Let me pause and shamelessly plug the AI Writing Course for Bloggers & Digital Marketers. It shows you under the hood of multiple AI writing tools and walks you through how to integrate AI writing tools, including Jasper and ChatGPT, into your workflow.
