To put these two competitors to the test, we decided to use the same AI-generated text and human-written text to test their detection abilities.
Here is the little paragraph we used (generated by good ol’ ChatGPT):
“Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting and heartwarming experience. The moment you open your door and see those wagging tails and bright eyes, you know your life is about to be filled with endless love and playful moments. As you introduce your furry friend to their new surroundings, you embark on a journey of companionship, training, and unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.”
I also used my writing skills to come up with a similar paragraph that, while maybe a bit awkward and even contrived, was actually created by a human:
“It's always exciting to bring home a new puppy. You'll be reminded of the loving connection you have with your best friend every time you're greeted at the door with wagging tails and kisses. The journey you take with your new furry companion will involve training, making memories, and companionship, which will all make up an unforgettable dynamic.”
The ChatGPT text surprisingly passed a few of Undetectable.ai’s checkers and half-passed others, though Undetectable isn’t able to show me why it did, nor highlight parts that seemed more AI-written than others.
The results from my human-written content were a bit disappointing (and maybe even hurt my feelings a little bit!) as four of Undetectable’s checker sources said my content was 50% AI.
As for Originality.AI, apparently, my original AI paragraph was too short, so I had ChatGPT beef it up a bit.
The results were clear. It clocked it as 100% AI-generated and even highlighted the whole dang thing.
As for my own writing, my feelings were hurt yet again as it clocked my writing as 100% AI as well.
And all this time, I was so sure I was a person! What a bummer I had to find out this way.
In all seriousness, it seems that false positives are far more common in both than false negatives.
